Oral Fluid / Saliva Drug Screening
Oral Screening
Oral fluid drug screening can be administered via two methods; instant ‘point of care’ or via laboratory analysis. The screening stage provides initial results which determine if substances are present in a person’s sample or not. These are either ‘non-negative’ or ‘negative’.
Advantages:
- Two screening methods, instant ‘point of care’ or laboratory
- Non-invasive collection
- No requirement for secure toilet facility
- A shorter detection window
- Fully-accredited laboratory confirmation
A range of drugs can be detected:
- Barbiturates (BAR)
- Benzodiazepine (BZO)(including Diazepam, Temazepam and others)
- Cannabis (THC)
- Cocaine (COC)
- Ecstasy (MDMA)
- Heroin (within OPI test)
- Methadone (MTD)
- Methamphetamine (MAMP)
- Opiates (OPI)(including Morphine, Dihydrocodeine and others)
The Process
Following initial collection preparations, donors are legally identified and their samples collected using a strict set of procedures called ‘the chain of custody’. The sample is then either screened straight away using a point of care device, or packaged with the appropriate security protocols to ensure the integrity of the sample and screened at the laboratory.
If either method presents a ‘non-negative’ result, the sample enters the “confirmation” stage of further in-depth scientific analysis. At this point, it can be determined whether the substance found if medication in line with a therapeutic dose or illegal substance(s).
